UK strikes: half a million workers demand ‘fair pay’

Up to half a million striking workers made today the biggest mass action in the UK since 2011.

With teachers joining picket lines, working parents across England, Wales and Scotland had to make alternative arrangements as many schools and colleges closed to most or all pupils.

Thousands marched in London, where the head of the TUC called on the Prime Minister to "get round the table and deliver on public sector pay".

As well as teachers, also on strike today were around 70,000 University staff from the UCU, some 100,000 civil servants from over 120 government departments and thousands of train workers from RMT unions, as well as some London bus services.

If you look past the increase in national debt, the falling value of the pound, the NHS failing, the attack on the right to protest, fall in living standards, and many other things, at least we have more tax dodging millionaires. Surely that will save us!

SHE did NOT just said it’s disappointing that teachers are standing up for themselves! Did she ?! Man, no one in the government cares or they’re delusional

I'm so sick of these teachers, nurses, ambulance workers, railway workers, border controllers, doctors, postal workers, civil servants and driving test instructors. They clearly don't understand hard-working Brits, like hedge fund managers, political donors and millionaire tax dodgers... Those guys are the real heroes!

Will nobody think of the poor CEOs who can only afford four megayachts? Or the tragic case of the bankers who made billions betting against the pound? These selfish strikers clearly aren't thinking about the needs of the poor suffering in international tax havens throughout the world! For shame!

Tupac: they've got money for wars but can't feed the poor.

My brother was working as a systems control engineer in the UK for 29k, now he’s doing the same job for 55k in Austria. That trend is fairly common across industries. Pay in the UK is a disgrace.

She's unbelievable. The level of gaslighting of the general public and the teachers is unreal. "Can't afford bonuses" - also MPs gave themselves a bonus!

Considering MP's get paid twice as much as teachers, and spend most of their time fast asleep on the back benches, is a slap in the face to all the teachers trying to educate their children.

It must be noted that the strikes are not just for pay... It is also for how funding is made, terms and conditions, management, recruitment and safety(whether it is teachers, nurses, railway workers, civil servants).

Things will NEVER change unless people continue to come together and say, enough is enough.

My cousin's a teacher in England, I was absolutely baffled to learn that she had to buy class furnitures herself.

Funny how letting bankers have massive bonuses, ceo pay and bonuses skyrocketing has no effect on inflation at all. Evidently. According to Chunt and Fishi Rishi . Of course if more Non doms and their ilk actually paid tax here it would be a big help.

"Do you think the people will put up with this?"
"We are the people."

I need that energy in my life for everything that I do.

I left my teaching job after 2 years. I was a teacher from age 22-24. It destroyed my mental health. You do not get paid enough for the disgraceful behaviour and work load and stress that you have to deal with. My mental health is still so poor from teaching

Yet Sunak and his cronies would have you believe that these people are not members of the public. And, that the public, whoever that might be, needs to be protected from them.

Uk.wages have been suppressed for years and subsidised by taxpayers instead of the employers paying a decent rate of pay .
