The old ways still work today: making a pump drill - Always Ants

Join me in camp(s) as I make a pump drill from scratch in the woods of Oregon in September 2022.

This ancient living tool is actually rather sophisticated and indicates a higher understanding of physics and materials than so-called "primitive" people are unfairly assigned. It is unlikely that a "dumb caveman" came up with this idea, and so those who used it thousands of years ago were clearly more advanced than we give them credit for.

Making pump drill is a very teachable project, and also is a wonderful connection with our prehistory and those original off-gridders and DIYers-- as well as my childhood! As a kid I loved trying out pump drills at various Living History Days I was taken to, and the nostalgia when cranking on my own pump drills conjures warm feelings of those innocent days filled with wonder.

I highly recommend trying this out, and of course making it your own way in your own style with your own methods. There's more than one way to skin and cat and there's more than one way to pump a drill!

notch the top of the spindle more deeply, so you can add a wooden wedge up there, keeping the string from jumping out of the notch.

Wow! What a surprise. This sure gets the creative juices flowing. Can’t wait to give this a try myself. As always, your enthusiasm for the simple things is both entertaining and infectious. I’m anxiously awaiting your next adventure.

quarter split the bottom of your spindle, create a long-tapering shank of soft, dry wood and lash it into the split. The you can change out that spindle nose as it wears down. The hearth and the spindle nose are all that you have to keep dry, in your tinder-pouch, The rest of the pump drill can be green, wet wood.
