A Sacred Music Concert – Erlanger United Methodist Church – 1977
rich mullins
Early in 1977, richard began working as a youth minister for a Methodist church in Northern Kentucky. He quickly fell in love with these kids who had shortened his name to “chard”, their parents, those he directed in the choir and most especially their pastor, Mr. Barber. Somehow, these folks “got” him and he blossomed into what he considered to be his first true ministry. They loved his playfulness, his devotion and commitment to their kids and his respect for the adults of all ages attending there. His car was always full of kids and he took them everywhere with him. His mom and dad were used to him showing up with a car full of college kids… now it was junior high and high school kids. I was traveling for CBS in Come Alive for the Summer, and lost count of how many times I’d look out from the stage to see some of them standing in the back…because they were always late… waving madly at me. Richard.. bringing his youth group to Come Alive concerts …who’d’ve thought. But, they were his kids, and he wanted to open their awareness to all the opportunities out there... which included CBS. He did end up writing a song called, “Come Alive” that Summer… though the inspiration stopped at the title. The church folks, who also gave him his first guitar, hosted a number of concerts for him to share his music. One such evening was called, “A Sacred Music Concert”. One of his youth sponsors and soon to be co-founders of Zion, Pam Zea, recorded and took pictures that evening …and for years to come. Certainly, gifts that keep on giving for which I’m ever grateful. I’ve posted each of these songs in some form over the years, but thought you might enjoy hearing the evening in its entirety. He quite often took time in his concerts to talk, rant or wax eloquently.. depending. But, this night… he was home. He deeply loved these people and their kids, so took time to do a bit of coaching as well, which is lovely. For any of you who were there that evening, this is for you… and for those like Joe Cook who just want to listen in on what was a wonderfully personal evening with “chard”. Here is the complete concert of “A Sacred Music Concert”, Erlanger United Methodist Church, 1977.
