From 1984 to 1994, a perfect storm of people and circumstances changed the face of animation forever.

Waking Sleeping Beauty is no fairytale. It is a story of clashing egos, out of control budgets, escalating tensions... and one of the most extraordinary creative periods in animation history.

Director Don Hahn and producer Peter Schneider, key players at Walt Disney Studios Feature Animation department during the mid1980s, offer a behind-the-magic glimpse of the turbulent times the Animation Studio was going through and the staggering output of hits that followed over the next ten years. Artists polarized between the hungry young innovators and the old guard who refused to relinquish control, mounting tensions due to a string of box office flops, and warring studio heads create the backdrop for this fascinating story told with a unique and candid perspective from those that were there. Through interviews, internal memos, home movies, and a cast of characters featuring Michael Eisner, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and Roy Disney, alongside an amazing array of talented artists that includes Don Bluth, John Lasseter, and Tim Burton, Waking Sleeping Beauty shines a light on Disney Animations darkest hours, greatest joys and its improbable renaissance.

An Official Selection at the 2009 Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and winner of the Audience Award at the Hamptons International Film Festival, Waking Sleeping Beauty is directed by Don Hahn, and produced by Peter Schneider and Don Hahn.

You're right. Maybe The Princess and the Frog wasn't a masterpiece like Beauty and the Beast, but it was funny and good, and I'm so glad that Disney is going to make new fairytales and musicals.

I grew up with the labyrinth and the dark crystal too....but I have to object, Disney shaped me as a child. If the littler mermaid had never been made, I think I would be very different. It made me believe in things like following my heart and not letting anything stand in my way. It taught me about love and what a rare an awesome thing it is....to never take it for granted. I am in love with Disney! ( not so much now though ....its gone to poo now )

Lol, I love how their like "Hi Tim! This is Tum Burton!" It makes me laugh and I think it's because now everybody knows who he is, and also that he turns his head slowly and gives them a "Wtf are you doing?" look XP.

Why isn't there a sequel to this that goes from Pocahontas to Chicken Little and a threequel that goes from Chicken Little to Zootopia? I would LOVE to see them!

Hercules, Mulan and Tarzan were released in 97, 98 and 99 respectively... not in the 00s.

Just saw this film tonight and it was wonderful. It was funny, insightful, instructive and one of the better behind the scenes documentaries I have ever seen. It shows all the trauma that occurred in lifting the failing Disney animation devision up into a new era of success. The whole thing is told with period film footage. Very interesting and entertaining.

BTW, did anybody else find it funny how they acknowledged John Lasseter as being the camera guy? XD

Just finished watching the flm. A very honest and remarkable documentary indeed. I just love the politics between the executives. On the other hand, I love how they put out their hearts to Disney and its core mission - TO MAKE US ALL HAPPY! ☺

Disney ought to buy the rights for this. This is the "mind behind the magic".
