According to Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie, both Madonna and Prince were invited. Prince did not go because he wanted to do a guitar solo and they, were like, no. No one's doing solos. And he didn't want to stand near anybody, especially Michael Jackson. It was never explained why madonna chose not to go, but according to most of people involved, she was invited. Technically, there were a lot of really good singers and musicians that were left out.
