Evan Mobley is now a max contract NBA player.

The Cleveland Cavaliers rewarded their super talented young big man with the rookie max extension for 5 years, $224M, that could be worth up to $269M if he hits certain incentives.

We'll break down everything you need to know about the max, what it means for the Cavs ability to build a roster around Mobley, Donovan Mitchell & Darius Garland moving forward and why Koby Altman had no choice in the matter.

Cleveland Cavaliers 7-footer Evan Mobley has agreed to a five-year, $224 million maximum rookie contract extension that could become worth as much as $269 million, agents Joe Smith and Thad Foucher of Wasserman told ESPN on Saturday.

Mobley, 23, has quickly become one of the league's elite young defensive big men, finishing third in voting for Defensive Player of the Year in 2023 as well as being named an All-Defensive first-teamer.

He averaged 15.7 points, 9.4 rebounds and 1.4 blocks last season for Cleveland, while also posting career-high shooting percentages: 57.9% overall, 37.3% from 3 and 71.9% from the free throw line.

Since arriving as the third pick in the 2021 NBA draft out of USC, Mobley has helped lead the Cavaliers to finishing seventh in defensive rating last season, first in 2022-23 and fifth in 2021-22. Over that span, Mobley is also one of just four players -- along with Anthony Davis, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Rudy Gobert -- to have at least 300 blocks and 150 steals, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.

Sad when you have to pay for potential instead of actual production

Cavs need to improve their roster with cheap/team friendly deals from bottoms up roster...15th man to the 5th man! Hope to see Travers....and maybe go out and get a player like Aleks Pokusevski to improve our talent level bottoms up! Can't afford 3 max plus contracts without trying to go el cheapo with some others!

Okoro at a 5 was a miss....Agbaji at 14 was a miss...Windler was a miss...KPJ was a miss...Khalifa Flop was a miss....what are you talking about Jason? Sexton was a miss at 8 as well....I'm sorry...when you don't extend your own picks...that's a miss!

Team is getting very expensive. Time to be a real contender, as this core will be broken up if they are not successful.

Everyone calm down. Don’t worry. Evan Mobley is a superstar and will be better than AD, Wemby and Jokic. It’s just development. 2-3 years more of development then he may get 18, 19 a game!! And just close your eyes when he turns the ball over.

Well, they're now capped out, and condemned to NBA purgatory, a top 6 Eastern Conference team with no real chance to win anything. Unless Mobley puts on 25 lbs. of muscle, Allen puts on 20 lbs., and Garland bulks up, they're pretty much screwed. They're too small, can't shoot, and aren't tough. So, congrats, I guess.

Horrible idea to give this to a player who hasn't proved his worth yet. I love him and the cavs but doesn't make any sense really

A max contract for a good, not spectacular player. .. we all know this will handcuffed us for years. Terrible. He is NOT that guy

I genuinely hate the current state of sports, where players get paid like top 5 players when they’re not even top 100. Absolutely idiotic and doesn’t make any sense.

40 million a year for a guy who literally cannot put the ball on the floor and attack the rim. Also, doesn’t have a jumphot. Can’t pass. And can barely shoot a spot up 3. But hey. He can play defense. 😂. Dude is so overrated
