Ice Smith Cold Plunge Chiller Review | DIY Cold Plunge

Here's my initial take on the Ice Smith Chiller 🤘

I fall in the DIY camp of plumbing a pump, chiller & filtration/ozone sanitation system yourself simply because repairing or replacing those individual components will be easier and likely cheaper than fixing/repairing or even replacing an all-in-one chiller.

Keeping that in mind, this is a really cool chiller. Despite some bumps in the road, it works exactly how it is supposed to. If you are on the fence, make sure to watch this review 👍

I have this unit and the only way to prime the system (remove air from pump) each time is tipping the unit on its side. Lifting the filter side up. Keep that side tilted up for 15/30 seconds and it starts pumping. Other then that it will drive you nuts and you can’t get it to run.

Thanks to the person who first posted that trick

Thank you, I’m in the process of finding the best chiller for me currently. I’d love to hear the comparison between your three chillers!

Smith giving you this for free was a good idea. He's a pretty smart business guy. I think it will be successful in this industry.

Do you by any chance remember the contact info for the company. They are taking forever to respond to emails and i can’t find them on facebook to do the messenger chat like you were talking about.

Could you post all the new hoses and fittings you used? I have the same unit, small leaks.

So I want to add to this I got a bigger one than this model and had the same water flow issue. I tilted up the machine while it was on to unscrew the filter to make sure it was on correctly and the machine started pumping. I’m guessing the water just needed to get into the pump for it to start working. You don’t have to siphon it.

Hi. I have the same model chiller as yours in the video, but from a different ice bath company. I came across your video searching for solutions to my issue. Hoping you might have some insight or can point me in the right direction for solutions. The setup is in my unfinished basement, so inside. The chiller worked fine for about 6 weeks. I was taking ice baths for 3-5 minutes a few times a week. After the first month, the main filter was getting a little brown, so I went ahead and changed it. During the 6 weeks, I was gradually adjusting the temperature lower. After a couple minutes the fan would kick on and start chilling the water more. But after 6 weeks, the fan stopped kicking on to chill the water, no matter what I set the temperature to. No water flow issues through the chiller, just temp issues. I checked the inlet filter and it was free of debris. Right now my chiller is useless. The water is just at room temperature. Thanks for any insight you have on what is causing the issue or how I can rectify it.

If you were New to Ice Bath and building your system, would you select this all in one?
New here and buying parts to build my ice bath. Thank you....

i found a 1.5 hp chiller in my area for a good deal. Would it be overkill? or would it just simply cool down the tub extremely quick? thank you for your insight

Have you come across an all in one chiller that’s worth it? Just got the ice barrel 400 and looking to do the diy but wanted to see if any all in ones are worth it before I buy the whole setup instead

is that a special adapter you have for the out tube or did they send that with the kit?

I have a plunge from a different company, but the control face looks the same (I don’t want to say which company). Mine sits higher up, which I now realize is probably just a "stand". IIRC if you set up the wifi/app (probably uses TUYA) I think that is where you can switch the Celsius to F. If you need it, I can probably find the app set up instructions (you probably already have them) pretty quickly, just give me a private way to send them over. I have had some issues with getting mine to start up, and I suspect they may be for a similar reason. Air in the line, need siphon etc...

Is there any reason you couldn't have both puppies go over the top into the tub. Thanks in advance. (Turning my bath tub into cold plunge)

Good info and my gut tells me to do it the other way, filter/pump/chiller. But once you research how they do pools, , they do it your way. And home well systems do it your way. Now hot tubs it is filter first, , for figure? I have gone the contrarian route. I don't have a filtration system other than a now. Since the water is cold and flowing, and no sunlight gets to the water except for maybey 10 minutes a day tops, , , not sure how plant life can grow? Now I do get in my hot tub before cold plunge, , , so that removes body oils and soap, which I could see being a problem and need being filtered out. But so far after close to 3 months water is still crystal clear. But i do strain the tub with a pool strainer before each use and I started using that squirt gun toy to pull up sediment that you came up with to remove the gathered sediment on bottom of tub. I'm debating using chlorine tablets or hydrogen peroxide just to be on the safe need to do more research because I worry about the corrosive effects it might have on the chiller? But for now water is crystal clear, , , and I actually have 2 tubs I built and don't seem to be having problems. But again, probably smarter to put in filtration system and I like the way you have yours set up, and first sign of algae growth, I'm installing your setup.
