Visual Acuity Test - At Home. Snellen Chart
Показать описание
How Vision Works
Light enters through the cornea, passes the pupil (regulated by the iris), and is focused by the lens onto the retina, where photoreceptors send signals to the brain.
Role of the Vitreous Body
The vitreous body is a clear, gel-like substance that fills 80% of the eye’s volume, maintaining its round shape and supporting internal structure.
Snellen Chart Test
The Snellen chart is the most common test for distance visual acuity. Patients read decreasingly small letters from 20 feet away to assess clarity of vision.
Understanding 20/20 Vision
20/20 vision means seeing clearly at 20 feet what a person with normal vision can. 20/40 means seeing at 20 feet what others see at 40, indicating 50% vision.
Legal Blindness
20/200 vision is the threshold for legal blindness, meaning the person can only read the top line (largest letters) from 20 feet away.
Vision Beyond Normal
Reading beyond line 8 of the Snellen chart suggests vision better than 20/20, such as 20/15 or 20/10, indicating sharper-than-average eyesight.
Pinhole Test for Refractive Errors
A pinhole test can temporarily correct vision by allowing only straight light rays to pass, bypassing refractive errors like nearsightedness or astigmatism.
DIY Pinhole Test
Create a pinhole by poking a 1-2 mm hole in paper or foil and look through it at distant objects to test for refractive errors.
At-Home Snellen Test
Use a phone or computer Snellen chart by sitting 4 feet away in proper lighting to self-assess visual acuity at home.
Driving and Gun License Requirements
Most countries require at least 20/40 vision (50%) in one eye for a driver’s license, while 20/70 vision may qualify for daytime driving. Similar requirements exist for gun licenses.
