The only purpose of programming is in learning how to think and be creative - programming itself is actually fairly straightforward.
What is difficult is the experience required to be good at it.
Also don't neglect your education in other areas such as reading good literature - being a developer is a creative career and the more you can bring to it from different areas the better at it you will be.

That's why educators are beginning to call for making computer science a cornerstone of the curriculum, even for grade school students. Computer science requires analytical skills, problem solving and creativity, while also being both foundational and vocational.
