While the worst of COVID-19 may be over, the pandemic continues to shake the workplace, particularly for older workers. In fact, a new AARP survey revealed that approximately 1 in 4 older workers who lost jobs are struggling to get rehired.

While looking for a job is hardly easy for anyone, especially during a pandemic, many professionals in their 50s, 60s or 70s face a unique challenge that can hurt their chances of getting a new job or advancing in their careers: age discrimination. Experienced workers bring expertise, maturity and perspective. Yet, negative stereotypes and outdated assumptions mean that older workers and jobseekers are often treated unfairly.

While all age discrimination in the workplace is unfair, it can also be illegal, thanks to the Age Discrimination in Employment Act that protects workers aged 40 and older. It’s important that all older workers know their rights in the workplace.

Bill Rivera, Senior Vice President for Litigation at AARP Foundation, is available to discuss how older workers can recognize and fight age discrimination in both the hiring process and in the workplace.
