Enjoy the lesson everyone, stay away from the negativity that sometimes get posted in the comments here on Youtube.

Happy rudimenting! (is that a word?)

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Are you talking about doing it this way instead of using single strokes? Or to not change the lead hand? Not changing the lead hand would be harder as you'd have three strokes in a row right in the middle of the rudiment. Whatever works for you though!

Nice simple, adds a lot to the practice I've been sticking out on the pad! Thanks Jared.

The drums sound amazing and the cymbals sound PERFECT. What a great tone and decay!

Thanks for the comment! In this lesson I am using the Pro-Mark 707 (Simon Phillips signature stick). However, I'm in the process of selecting a new type of Pro-Mark stick as I'm just not happy with that one. When I finally settle on an exact model I'll post a video to announce it and explain my reasoning for the choice. Hope that helps!

Maybe it's a little over the top, but I could definitely hear that fill played in some sort of gospel music setting.

Well, if you play a larger kit, you can try a more ambidextrous setup. I like to keep a tom under my hats, and if I have extra rides or hats laying around, sometimes I'll play with hats and a ride on each side. It really improved my independence and mobility.

Chris Adler (lamb of god) is a right handed drummer on a right handed setup and he starts most of his fills with his left hand so i guess its just practice.

i'm right handed and i practice(ed) a lot on going "reverse" on my toms ( from the bigy to the smallest) and there you have to do a cross over ( same for going from floor tom to snare for right handed drummers)

YESS!! awesome lesson/vid. the 2nd one was pretty insane and slightly strange (i like it fer sure, just a lil cacophonous) but the 3rd is SIIIICK!! excellent application and i could hear tearing that one a new hole in the climax of a song or having that be the ending measure or sommat like that. just got in2 the 5 stroke roll a bit ago and i love seeing the many applications. thank you!

The 769's are too heavy and the 526's aren't thick enough for my liking. Man, I can't believe how well you do those five stroke rolls Jared. I have been playing for over 40 yrs now and I can't hold a candle to you my friend. However, I am working on improving every day, but I'm not getting any younger and I am having many problems with pain due to arthritis and fibromyalgia, to name but a few of my health concerns. Never say die though is what I say and I just can't stop drumming. I love it.

Once again great lesson. Exercise #2 isn't very rythmic, but it's great for finding the 1 once ya get comfortable with it.

I have the same "problem". I do everything left handed except sit at a kit, which I do like a righty. Unless of course I am doing a fill, which then goes back to left hand lead. I have decided that instead of fixing myself, I will play my style and not worry about it. Sure, I can't play all of the crazy long and fast fills through the toms like some people, but the fills I play I am willing to bet would be harder for a righty to play. Be you at the kit baby!

This is a great lesson but I'm not sure if I like exercise 2 that much, it seems a bit messy to me. The five stroke roll has 5 beats in it of course, and you're playing it here as 16th note triplets which are basically just sextuplets, but you're not accenting them like sextuplets usually are (like 6/8 with the accent on the 1 and the 4). I can't really even tell how you're trying to accent them. The hi hat hit comes once after 9 beats then again after 10 beats. Something that might be more interesting would be to accent the beginning of every 5-stroke roll. If you did this with the triplets then you'd have some great polyrhythmic and polymetric stuff going on, incorporating 5, 3, and 4 at the same time. Of course this wouldn't fit cleanly into a bar of 4/4 so you'd have to shave off the last 8th note of the pattern, but you're already doing that in the exercise anyway.

That is "extremely" helpful Jared, thank you "so" very much for getting right back to me. I can't wait to see you video on your new choice of drumstick. I am struggling with my drumstick choice also. I love ProMark drumsticks, but I can't find a pair with the proper type of tip for my preference. Any chance you could explain to me why you are unhappy with your present choice? I have 2 sets of ProMark sticks, 769 Billy "Thurder" Mason & 526 Billy Ward the Bulb Sticks.
