Ditto on the purr chirp noise, my Deaf kitty did it too!!
Huge tip for deaf kitty owners, there's the 'pat' method, of lightly patting / tapping the area near your deaf cat, instead of directly touching them, to wake them up.
This gives them a vibration to become alert to, instead of being touched directly which can make them stressed and on defense right after waking.

Obviously this depends on the Deaf kitty, I just really really appreciated this tip when I read it and it helped waking my kitty up in calm way where he didn't jolt or look shocked.

My cat was deaf, and also looked and did the same thing, this is so wonderful to see because he died before there were any widely available video tools around. Seeing this really made me think of him, thank you T__T

What helps really a lot is gently pressing down the area next to them that they are lying on if it's soft, like a chair or sofa or cat basket, and if it's solid like a window sill you can gently tap your fingernails on it and it will feel the vibration, she will be able to detect you immediately without getting any fright. She can sense you are there without you having to touch her which is lovely. You have kitty's attention, and kitty gets no fright.😊🐾

You should try just blowing gently on him to let him know your there. It might work better, not to startle him too much.
