3 simple words that hit you right in the core of your emotions,

By far the best quote from the movie.

This is like that one video called "Obi-wan get PTSD", in the sense that while the title of the video is accurate, it also offers more than that.

Death: “Pick it up.”
*Later*
Puss in Boots: “Pick it up.”
Death: “You dare use my own phrase against me, Boots?”

Another favorite detail of mine is the characters all kept their scars in the end. Contrary to recent animated movies where wounds magically disappear, you can even see Puss' forehead scar in the final fight.

I wonder if Death changes his appearance depending on who he wants to intimidate the most…

The reason the first one is so emotionally striking is because normally the enemy would just try to kill him right there but Lobo is straight up forcing Puss to pick the sword up.

That moment when you want Sam to pick up that silly object despite him just telling you over and over again “I can't pick that up.”

This just made me realize that Puss had feared death all this time, but had no one to live for. But now it's actually the reverse, where he now has people to live for and conquers his fear of death. No longer living for himself. Rather than clinging to life desperately, and selfishly, he fights for his life confidently for those he cares for.

You know how damn good they are when they want you to pick up the weapon that you dropped

The last one, when he says it to Death.
Look at Death's face. He's both suprised... and has a hint of a smile. Not a cruel smile, a genuinely happy one.

He sees Puss has changed. He's fighting back. He's giving it his all. He's not just showing off, fighting for glory. He's FIGHTING FOR HIS LIFE. It's now something that has value to him, is precious, precious enough to fight for, to give it his all for, more precious to him than being a legend.

The precious lives he has previously frivolously wasted now clearly MEAN SOMETHING to him in a way they hadn't before, now that they're gone.

Puss has learned his lesson from Death, and Death is pleased to see it.

And that's why Death leaves, and if you notice, when he does, his ominous whistle is no longer in low key, but high key... a pleasant, friendly, and cheerful tune now, when before it had been menacing and uncomfortable and somber..

Death is no longer his enemy, and he's making that clear with the final whistle.

'All is now forgiven between us Puss. Take care of that last life like I KNOW you will. Never forget what you learned. When we meet again, I hope we will still be friends. And I hope you will still fight me then as you do now.' Says that whistle.

Trying to put to words how that last "pick it up" makes me feel. It's like Into the Spiderverse when Miles takes his leap of faith. I'm proud and excited and inspired and it's really a credit to both those movies that they build up to these chills inducing points so well.

Death is the best animated villain that DreamWorks have ever constructed as a character, in the history of DreamWorks animation. Just listening to the whistle, gave me chills throughout my body. The movie as a whole was the best that I've seen in my entire life, and I'm so glad that they made the movie in such a special way, such as dealing with trauma, anxiety and selfishness. This movie was a masterpiece, and I can't wait for the next movie in the Shrek franchise. Hopefully a Shrek 5! Thankyou DreamWorks for the masterpiece, that this film is.

Why does he look almost confused/almost hurt even when puss doesn't pick up the sword the first time they meet as he keeps saying it. He doesn't even look smug, like he's genuinely worried he's not going to pick up the sword lmao.

I think of this simple 3 word quote as a sort of way for Puss to "ground" himself whenever his anxiety takes over, after all, he is literally staring in the face of death...
