The late great Los Angeles Lakers icon Jerry West wasn't all too thrilled with a take that ESPN's JJ Redick had about NBA players like Boston Celtics legend Bob Cousy and himself playing against firemen and plumbers during their era, downplaying anything they accomplished on the basketball floor. What JJ fails to realize is that they played the best around for there time just like the players today. What will the athletes look like in 100 years? Way different I’d assume as well as the equipment and science behind the game and equipment. You don’t disrespect those who came before you. Without Jerry west and magic and bird and Kareem and MJ the athletes of today wouldn’t be playing and they sure as hell wouldn’t be making the money that they make today.

People don't realise that dribbling has evolved, and the rules have evolved to allow it. Drop a player from today in a game back then, and they'll be called for travelling or carrying the ball on every single possession. The game looks ridiculous by today's standards because of it, not because these guys weren't legit athletes.

As the game gets better and the players get better, you still have the same percentage of cream at the top. The only reason the game or the players get better is because of improved sciences and methods of developing the league. If those sciences and methods improve scrubs then they probably would improve the cream of the crop too.
