Estée Lauder has reached an out-of-court settlement with three make-up artists who lost their jobs after being asked to take a video interview that was assessed by an algorithm.
A machine is as biased as the people who designed them. It's worrying when creators refuse to acknowledge this. Especially when its proved over and over again. From taps that don't recognise black people to hospital machines that wrongly detect higher levels of oxygen in black people.

If you train a machine learning model on a representative group then it could be unbiased. But how do you get this group and know its really representative. Its very expensive to get people for this so you want to make it as small as possible. Then we don't really know how many different types of people there are and how to determine that. Think racial and cultural differences. Understanding lsnguage, use of facial expressions . Then people may have disabilities. You cannot check eye movement with blind people. And non neuro-typical are impossible to classify.

So you cannot asses everyone with one model and have to discriminate. Blind and neuro-typical people have to be assesed in seperate sessions by humans. Lots of neuro-typical don't even know they are. Its hopeless.

How is it proved to be Unbiased? How long has this been implemented and what was the feedback of applicants?
