I know this song is about two people drifting apart, breaking up, but I often think it can also be applied to losing the memory of a loved one who passed. Forgetting their face, the sound of their voice, etc. Laying awake at night and talking to them in your head and trying to rectify their fleeting memory. In that sense this song has more meaning to me.

I met a Chinese girl on the top of a mountain while backpacking in Jeju Island, South Korea. She was painting the scenery while I was sketching. Shortly after we began talking. Between her broken English and my inability to speak Chinese, we found a way to communicate through art, music and body language. We spent six days together travelling around the island. I had never felt such a connection with someone. Maybe because Jeju has such a romantic aura or maybe because two very lonely people happen to meet on top of a mountain. We shared so much of our lives to each other and our feelings for each other grew.

On the last day together, she told me that it will be over soon and that she just wished that time could stop. I told her to stop thinking about the future, because you would spend your entire life absent in the present. Whatever happens in our lives, we will always have Jeju. We went to the beaches and watched the sunset, while listening to cheesy Chinese romantic pop music.

When we got back to the hostel, our last meal together was something symbolic to our time together. Instant noodles. Quick and savoury, but always wanting more.

We had both fallen asleep on the couch of the living room. I woke up in the middle of the night and I remember asking her, "Hey, are you awake? How close am I to losing you?" I don't think she fully understood what I said at that moment. I carried her to her room and I told her I would take her to the airport at 7:00AM. She agreed, and I went to bed.

I awoke the next morning, and asked the host of the Hostel where she went. The host told me that she almost didn't make it to the airport and that she left immediately with a taxi. I checked my alarm and found out I had accidentally set it to 7:00PM.

On the ferry ride back to Korea, this song came up in my shuffled playlist. I remember crying looking out into the sea. A little Korean boy walked up to me asked what I was crying about. I told him in my broken Korean, "About today".

I never saw her again.

I lost my sister three years ago...after a 7 year battle with ovarian cancer....we reconciled the last few years and I sent this song to her after we began to come back together. The hardest part is I wasn't there when she passed...I lived in another state and by the time I got to her house, her body had been taken ( she donated her body to science). I will always think of her to this song.
