THE WORST COMMISSIONER GORDON

Commissioner Gordon wasn't anyone's favorite part of the first few Batman films.
Pat Hingle played the part from Batman - Batman and Robin

I liked Pat Hingle as Gordon in the first two Burton movies but sadly they just never gave Gordon the respect the character deserves in the Schumacher films

I will not tolerate any batman 1966 slander

I unironically love when in Batman Forever he shakes hands with the cop beside him as Batman goes to save the day, as if he had any role in thwarting the Riddler and Two-Face.

It's like the student who did nothing in the group project celebrating getting an A.

The Schumacher movies (really Batman Robin) turned him into Chief O'Hara

The great tragedy of Batman '89 is that it laid down so much groundwork that was promptly ignored by its three sequels. The first film deftly blended together various elements of the Golden, Silver, and Bronze Ages of the Batman legend, along with a few sprinklings of the new post-Crisis continuity that was being established as the film was in development. All that the follow-ups had to do was pay off the setups, but they made almost no effort to do so. The result was a set of films where the whole was less than the sum of its Bat-parts.

Batman forever I think. When Gordon thought Batman wasn’t coming and then he flies thru the bat signal and Gordon cheers. That scene will live forever 🫶🏾

I can't stress how happy I am we still get to see and hear the immortally brilliant Kevin Conroy here. For me, not only the voice but the face of Batman as well. For me he's in the same club as Christopher Reeve, Jeremy Brett and David Suchett.

Pat Hingle voiced Old Rooter, the Scolosaurus who comforts Little Foot in "The Land Before Time." Imagine Commissioner Gordon giving Old Rooter's speech to a young Bruce Wayne.

I don't think Pat Hingle was all that bad as Commissioner Gordon. They just never USED him very well in the Burton films, and it was even worse in the Schumacher films. He was practically a non-entity in these films, and, like you noted, you don't learn much about Gordon whatsoever. He is JUST that unnecessary.

And I liked Pat Hingle as an actor. He was in a classic Twilight Zone episode, The Incredible World of Horace Ford.

7:52 I haven't even seen much of Gotham, but Ben's reading of that line will always stick with me: "there will be light". I've been fighting cancer for a couple years now and I get chills thinking about it.

I had no idea that Pat Hingle was probably cast specifically to deliver a scene like that. What a shame. I grew up with the Burton/Schumacher movies and the The Batman cartoon, and only ever understood Gordon's importance when I played the Arkham games as a teenager (and even then, I played City first, the only one of those he's not in save for two lines at the end).

What's sad for me is although I watched The Animated Series, the Gordon I was more used to was from the Burton/Schumacher series. I never realized how important he was to the Batman lore until Begins came out.

It's Pat Hingle,
he automatically gets a free pass.

Pat Hingle only had a good role in the first Batman film but was mainly a background character in the other three films.

“Shut it down” I need to watch more Batman stuff. Luckily your channel is helping put stuff on my radar.

You can tell the writers and director Joel Schumacher didn't know what to do with Pat Hingle as Gordon in theast two Batman movies so they just had him sideline.

Shut it down. I’d love to see you dive into how Gordon has changed over the years. Love your stuff man. Keep on keeping on.

I'd say this is because the first two and last two movies are, in my mind, different universes. Gordons completely different personality between the sets of movies is more proof of this than much of anything else.
