Dan, we run our pump and waterfall 24/7/365 and like you, we use a heater just in front of the skimmer. It keeps our waterfall and pond pretty much free of ice or if we have a long cold spell, it still has some open areas including the waterfall. We have a couple of aerators too, but we hadn't heard about not having them on the bottom. Our pond is only about 3 feet deep.
