Toyota has at last revealed the pricing and specification details for the all-all-new Yaris, and the news isn’t all good for price-conscious shoppers.

So let’s get the tough stuff out of the way first: the new Yaris arrives in three trim levels - the Ascent Sport, SX and ZR - with the cheapest, manual-equipped vehicle costing $22,130, stretching to $32,100 for the most expensive, hybrid-powered ZR.

That marks an entry-point increase of almost $7000, with the former model’s cheapest offering being the $15,390 Ascent Manual - a price increase of more than 40 per cent.

Yes, it seems the sub-$20k new car is dead, at least at Toyota.

Ridiculous pricing even for the base model. $22k for a tiny car with crappy interior quality, halogen lights, drum brakes in the rear and manual a/c?
how do they justify $7k increase just for some safety tech? even if you option those features in premium cars, you wouldn't pay anywhere near $7k.

Why they call the entry model an Ascent Sport is just marketing. It is actually just an Ascent with its plastic steering wheel. This is the same naming convention as the Corolla. Remember the previous Ascent Sport had the leather steering wheel and alloys, not to mention other bits and pieces.

It seems like Toyota doesn’t fully understand the target audience of this car. The Yaris is meant to be a affordable city car that P platers, frugal adults and something our grandparents would buy. How the heck is $22, 000 justified for such a lackluster car???

This car will make a great replacement for the discontinued Falcon, Commodore. I can see the good country folk lining up. Perhaps they will sell well in Melbourne with its permanent lockdown and 5km limit. People will cross shop it with a bicycle.
