My paternal great grandfather and my maternal great grandmother were both sold during the great depression! Tbey used to tell all the kids in the family to eat their veggies and drink their milk because they never got either of those.

Sadly this was common during the Great Depression when there were too many mouths to feed and not enough food. People also adopted children to work on their farms as free labor. My dad was adopted and there was not the closest relationship with his parents and I know why because my mom told me but my dad doesn’t know I know! Sad because I wasn’t fond of my dad’s parents either, I was respectful but my mom’s parents were the ones who loved me no matter what!
