Thailsnd's History: Bangkok. The Victory Monument is one of the citys most famous landmarks, a towering monument celebrating victory in the brief war between France and Thailand in 1940-41. The story of what happened, the back story on their previous conflict in 1893 when the French were attempting to colonise all in their path around South East Asia.
We also look at the design and the sculptor, Corrado Feroci and his work with the Thai Royal Family, his legacy and expertise that influenced a generation of Thai artists.
Plus we take a walk around the neighbourhood, see the sights, the sounds, the people, nightlife, the back streets, alleys, sois and the canals.

It is perhaps not commonly realised unless you get up very close to Victory Monument, but it is not just that the names of the fallen are inscribed on the monument, in fact their ashes are interred inside the monument. There are locked gates at the base of the monument that lead inside.

Nicely done Pat, thank you. My favorite part of the video was in the black and white clips of soldiers marching around the monument there was a soi dog looking annoyed with them.

Brilliant history lesson. I suppose someone less cautious than you and I might reflect upon a subtext to your comments and draw a historical parallel to the Thai government's geopolitical decision-making during the 1940s and the present day. But, I suppose someone may do that on another platform!

I checked out The Stay Cafe based on your suggestion. Great food and the couple running it are really friendly.

The best explanation of the 'Victory' I've heard in over 30 years. Looking forward to your series on TV.

Once again, we’ll done :-)

Original content presented in an easy to watch, professional manner. Thank you. I learn something every time I tune into your channel.

I recall reading about the Paknam incident in “Thailand : A short history (Wyatt) which is a great read. He also covers an incident between the Thai navy and Thai Air Force ( a video in itself I think).

A great area that we visit every time we are in Bangkok and my wife drags me around showing me where she used to hang after school back in the day

Also, does anybody have low volume issues with the video ? The last few have been very low in volume ( for me) and then when the ad hits it’s like I’m at a death metal gig.

Thanks once again

Very interesting. Never knew the victory it commemorated. Worked at a language school around there and it was always crowded with minibuses at that time, so was never a place I wanted to stick around.

Great video - I wonder why you don't narrate over it all instead of using subtitles. You have a great spoken voice and delivery. I'd like to see more history from Thailand - this was very interesting (I'm a keen reader of 20th-century SE Asian history). I remember seeing, on another Thai vlogger's channel, some footage of the 'Seven Kings of Siam' statues at Rajabhakti Park. Wonderful statues (designed by Thailand's Fine Arts Department), but the Park itself seems to have been mired in controversy (allegations of corruption).

VM is one of the pulses of BKK. It's always a bit thrilling to go there. The Skytrain has only enhanced it status in that regard. The elevated walkway shows the city in all its kaleidoscopic glory. I once met a monk up there who gave me a blessing for my travels. I still carry with me the yellow stamped cloth he gave me.

In 2013. there was a Australian comedy show called "Hamish and Andy's Gap Year Asia" . It was broadcast from a bar in Bangkok, Thailand, called 'The Raintree' near Victory Monument. The show consisted of six episodes. The intro was from the bar in each episode, but they filmed in various parts of Thailand.
