Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Admiral Kirk's past comes back to bite him when the group of 20th century genetically engineered supermen that he sentenced to exile on planet Ceti Alpha V manage to escape aboard the USS Reliant. Their leader, Khan Noonien Singh is singularly motivated by his lust for revenge on Kirk, a threat compounded further by him having recently taken possession of a radical experiment, the Genesis device; a system designed to create life yet through misuse would certainly destroy it.

Khan has been defeated and the Enterprise is safe. Now we're dealing with the mess that Khan has left in his wake, starting with Spock's funeral, at which his best friend delivers a heartfelt eulogy.

I think Shatner sells it really well.

I defy any Star Trek fan to watch Scotty's plaintive playing of “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes without a moist eye. Leonard Nimoy, live long and prosper. 🖖🏻

Ten years ago today, we lost Mr. Nimoy. This scene still hits hard.

When I first saw this scene in the theater, I started crying (quietly) and I wasn't alone. I heard others in the darkness crying as well. We all knew that moment meant that Spock was gone forever. We would never see him again. And if it's true that Star Trek gave us hope for a better future, with Spock gone that felt like some of that hope was gone with him.

It doesn’t matter how many times I see it or that I know he’s resurrected in the next movie, it always gets me. 😭

To think the original plot was to have Spock die a third of the way into the movie. Thank God they changed it.

One of Shatner's most authentic performances, in my opinion. Very believable. One might even believe the actor expresses some true emotion towards his on screen friend. Why they still play bagpipes ( even for a half Vulcan ) at these funerals is beyond me though.

Now imagine Michael Burnham giving this eulogy. *shudder*

Such an incredible scene. Question though, 1 minute 11 seconds Saavik is crying is mind boggling.

Scenes like this don’t happen anymore. Nowadays they would try and lighten the mood with a stupid joke and rob the scene of its impact.

Hell forget scenes modern movies don’t get made like this anymore. Everyone is snarky with each other. Professionalism doesn’t exist. You can see how hard Kirk is trying to keep it together, and he has to because that’s part of being a leader. That’s what makes the break in his voice all the more powerful when it’s happens.

It’s the same thing with Spock on those rare occasions when he shows his emotions, there is weight there because he isn’t emotionally unstable. Unlike modern Drek where they don’t have a clue.

They should have let him stay dead. Bringing him back kinda takes away from this wonderful scene. And it's not like ST4 and 6 (so the really good sequels) couldn't have worked without him.
