An Interesting Access Control System Modification

Again, big thanks to Ian Runkle for pointing this one out to me north of the 49th!

This is Ian's great YouTube channel...

You can also find him on Twitter...

I've been encountering interesting modifications for a while now on the cabinets for telephony access control system units on the outside of buildings. Increasingly, we are seeing large bars installed so as to prevent someone from easily opening the cabinet by picking or otherwise compromising a (typically) wafer-based cam lock.

These modifications are taking things to something of an extreme, but I respect the hacker mindset of those who are doing them. Many have such a similar look, however, that I'm starting to wonder if some supply company is now selling ready-to-go kits for this project with the angle brackets and more.

If you have info about this, feel free to drop a comment or link below!

Hey! I am the guy who installed the last one from the video. We have been making them and installing them in Edmonton Alberta for the past year or so. We even have a crown lock guard so you can’t wrench the Canada postal lock and open the door.

Really great that people are finding their own ways of adding security instead of blindly trusting manufactures!

Had the case where I had lost the key for my bike lock but noticed that the key for the server rack looked mighty similar... Long story short that a fairly well known brand a locks here in EU uses off the shelf keys for bike locks. If you want to know the brands I'll dig them up ;) edit: AXA is the lock brand, pretty much one of the most used for bike locks here in NL.

Then: “We added a padlock for extra security”
LPL: “hold my Red Bull can”

Even if the current solutions don't stop a competent intruder, this at least shows that property owners are aware of the insecurities and are attempting to thwart trespassers. Hopefully with time these DIY solutions will improve to the point of true security!

Great video as always, keep up the good work :)

We did something clever and sensible, and then we undid it with a Masterlock...

Saw that bar, saw the masterlock, immediately thought "Click out of 1, nothing on 2, little click out of 3, and we got this open...."

these solutions don't feel like locksmiths with a lathe, but maintenance guys who got told to make a fix by management instead of management hiring a locksmith

Improvise, adapt, and overcome. I dig it. It's a relatively simple modification that tackle the problem. And it's a fairly modular solution that can be iterated upon and improve if there is a further vulnerability shown later on down the road.

The panel at my condo had a bar running across it, then someone pulled it off with a crowbar 😒

The last one, with the modified trailer hitch lock, could probably be made more secure simply by extending the righthand bracket over the Master lock in such a way that the lock is kept parallel to the wall. Having to pick or rake that lock while it's flat against the wall with the cylinder facing upwards so you can't see what you're doing would make it just that bit more difficult.

I love how custom these all are. A standard solution can eventually lead to a standard bypass, but there's something to be said about making an attacker pause because you've come up with something just a bit unique.

Ian Runkle does great videos, mostly about Canadian firearm laws/cases.
Totally worth watching for anyone living or traveling to Canada with any kind of weapon (firearm or otherwise).

The zoom out not only hows those lock boxes but the fire control system...I know nothing about them but I have a feeling accessing that panel would at least allow one to cause some havoc.

Thanks DKS for realizing the 16120 was an issue, and replacing it but then in the same post giving us the new key codes.... Atleast one key in the picture is partially obfuscated in the lock
