I hope this video goes viral, Ian. This is the most down-to-earth, non-techy review of the iPad Pro and I think more artists will rely on your opinion that the opinion of the techies here on YouTube. Nice work, and thanks for the excellent video.

Nice honest review Ian! And since you asked let clarify this:

1. Apple said Liquid display means nothing but the technology used to make a round cornered LCD display, it has nothing to do with the quality, although the the iPhone Xr also has a liquid Retina display, the new iPad Pro display is better and has more tech like Promotion.

2. When you tap on the lock screen with the Apple Pencil it will take to the notes app, this can't be customized as of yet, and this is a feature that was actually added in iOS 11, it works with the first gen Apple Pencil and all iPads that support it. ( it's not a new feature exclusive to the new Apple Pencil and iPad Pro )

"Liquid Retina" has nothing to do with the display quality so you won't be seeing any differences in how it looks. It's a marketing term apple uses to describe their custom pixel masking technique that allows for the rounded corners on an LCD without introducing light bleed.

I’m getting it. I have the current 12.9 iPad Pro. I’ll be getting it next year. I pad a total of 1360$ for everything and it’s earned it’s keep. I’m using it as a creative and I want to see if it’s a viable replacement to the Wacom tablets as I’m ready to crossover to 3D sculpting via Zbrush.

I am a professional artist and I have the 2017 iPad Pro and when the new 2018 model was announced to be honest other than a change in the pencil and possibly bevel size I couldn't see how they could improve as its only been a year, innovation and technology does change so fast but when the iPad Pro first came out it was a huge success among artists so it was difficult on how they could better it so soon.
After reading the specs and now watching your great review my theories have been confirmed, its a lot of money to simply buy the 2018 model for the change in pencil and how it charges and magnetizes which is really good to be honest, but other than a slightly slimmer, less beveled screen and the fact the IOS and Procreate are the same spec on the 2017 and 2018 models its not worth the money to ditch the 2017 model.
If you haven't got an iPad Pro then go for the 2018 model if your a professional artist, if your just starting out the 2017 is perfectly adequate.
Its best to get the biggest storage possibly but as an artist 64GB is more than enough, if your wanting to store videos then you should go for the highest storage.
One thing I don't like on the new iPad Pro 2018 is the reduction on the bevel, when I use it my palm sits on the main screen which does actually cause unwanted ink strokes etc, which is really annoying if you forget to check and later you see extra ink lines created by your palm.
With the 2017 model having the bevel gives you that space to rest your palm without disturbing the art your working on.
Also not having a home button can cause a problem especially if the iPad Pro crashes, as their is no other way of re-engaging the home screen other than turning the iPad off and on and that can risk losing any work you are currently working on.
For me, I am sticking with my 2017, its not a major issue charging the pencil and the specs for the IOS and software are the same, if I was to upgrade I will wait a couple of years until there is a model that seriously makes advances in what the iPad Pro can do from the 2017 model, to me this is Apple making money on a product with very little changes only the actual look which I can't personally justify the cost for such small improvements.

Fantastic video! And thank you for not shouting "what's up guys" at the outset and then subjecting us to a bunch of jump cuts. More YouTubers should behave this way.

Brilliant review Ian! Finally someone focusing on the practical side of a product review and not the boring technical aspects. Great video as always!

Good review but this is a bit far from an artist's review. Its kinda of a summary of the device. Most of what the keynote already noted

Thank you for the review, being an artist myself I couldn't care less about the technical details, you made it easy. ☺️

Excellent review of the iPad Pro as a tool for getting work done, not merely as a consumer electronics device or status purchase. Thank you!

Liquid retina is just a fancy name for lcd. The only difference is that liquid retina can have round corners and lcd can't

Nice review. I can say that, as a designer and lettering artist myself who uses the iPad pro a lot, the apple pencil changes were sooo necessary. I have the previous one and still sticking the pencil to the connector to charge and it is so annoying. Also, it's a miracle that I haven't lost the pencil cap yet. Hopefully, I had seen that cap holder Ian Barnard had, and had bought it too. Very useful!

How the pen charged sold me. I've been thinking about getting an ipad pro for 2 years now and I saw how the pen charged and went - that one - I need it. Haha. Can't wait till it gets here on wed.

As a tech junkie, this is the best review of the ipad I've seen. No youtube bull or gimmicks ("Like and subscribe, Smash that like button, ect"). No trying to make it a tiny tv show with gimmicky splash screens and over hyped music. Just a clean and clear video explaining the facts. Thank-you and good job!
