I was taught to use pine resin as waterproof kindling. Is similarly water resistant and doesn't involve burning rubber. Smells amazing as well.

Wow that is really only for emergency situations. That can't be healthy. Better keep some firestarters safe in a waterproof capsule or another small container

I agree the petroleum jelly cotton is excellent! I keep mine in an old 35mm film canister (the plastic kind) because it seals tightly and is very portable. Also look up "Fatwood" (aka Pine Knot Firewood) it's made from fallen pine trees where a branch meets the trunk. Thanks for the video

Good thing if you are prepping in advance for emergency situations. Dipping your cotton wool in wax helps keep it waterproof. It functions similarly to a candle, lasting longer but still being easy to burn, even when damp (not wet, soaking them in water will allow more water to penetrate).

However, in an emergency this is a fantastic tip to remember. Just make sure you use thin strips of tyre, since that is much easier to light. If it is a dire emergency and you are unsure of when help will arrive, you can light a fire in a spare tyre of a car that will burn for a long time and produce a thick black smoke to signal for help. There is a great infographic on this process.

Hopefully no one reading this will find themselves in a situation where they need to use this information, but now you know. Merry Christmas

Toxic. Just mix the cotton wool with vaseline. Keeps it water proof. Burns longer. Or use birch bark and a ferro rod. Works also when wet

Everyone keeps saying "Just use birch bark". It's worth noting that birch trees aren't absolutely everywhere. Which is why it's much more useful to know of and practice as many solutions as possible.

Just a small piece of birch bark has the same effect and you can find it in nature

This is great in an emergency. However another option. Is 'soak' cotton wool in vaseline or any other kind of petroleum jelly. It works well in wet weather and burns very hot and for quite a long time!

Put vaseline on the cotton wool keeps it dry and burns better

There are quite a lot of naturally found methods that work just as well if not better to start fires even in or after the rain. Though they do require a lot more work and knowledge
