Even though I'm not a beginner (anymore) I found this rather useful. I like that you've not got hung up on a "right way". It's whatever feels comfortable and works for the player. For me, it depends on whether I'm seated or not, but I tend to keep the neck up a bit and slightly away from my body for ease of chord changes.

Well, this fixed the terrible shoulder and neck pain I was getting for the last two weeks while I started learning to play. You're a lifesaver. Thanks!!!

Thanks for this video Baz! I've sent the link to at least a few dozen folks that needed help asking me about this topic, and after viewing your video here, and practicing along, they all thanked me a short time afterwards, so I am passing on the gratitude coming from more than just me. The ripple effect of your continued support to the ukulele community goes far and wide, and many folks besides just me, truly appreciate everything you do. Kudos brother! :)

Felt the need to find this video, even though i’ve been playing for a year, because I realised that I am 100% doing something wrong here. Self-taught, and somehow when i hold my ukulele, after 30 minutes or so, i can not feel my fingers anymore. And it totally helped! Reeeally unusual feeling to hold it differently now, but I can feel my fingers and I think it’s a success!) Thank you!

Hi, I've just began to learn to play the ukulele and I'm finding that the wrist of my fretting hand can become quite sore, a bit like a mild cramping pain, is this my arm getting used to the new position or am I holding/playing the fretboard wrong? Thank you

I think you need a strap especially for concert and tenor size. You also need to tilt the head rest a bit higher than the body so as to allow better chord change. My 2 cents.

Is the holding position any different for a shorter soprano uke?

also, what's the best way to position your fingers on the frets for the most even resonance?

Thanks for the tips. The neck of my ukulele was falling whenever I changed chords lol

I sit when I play because as a fattie, we generally have to deal with massive DDD boulders that prohibit us to hold these as small chested women or men normally do >__>

I've been holding my uke wrong this entire time I've been teaching myself. This way is so much easier!

It’s an old video but it seemed worth a shot to ask- I am struggling with my new ukulele sliding away from me… I try to tuck it into my elbow crook like you show, but the body then just slides away from my chest like it will just fall if I let it unless I also hold it in place with my fretting hand, and when I rest it on my leg instead it slides around on my lap… I am thinking my hands will need to be able to move freely to change my finger positions and strum, but I seem to need at least one hand to hold the instrument in place… it does have a smooth satin type finish, but they all seemed to be quite smooth at the shop and I can’t imagine it is just the shape of my bust, all shapes of people play… am I destined to play with a strap? That is fine but I don’t actually have one, I just got the uke and tuner and bag. I don’t have any notable experience with playing an instrument so learning the fretting is already plenty hard without worrying that the whole thing will fall to the floor. Any tips would be welcome! 🙏
