If trump does what he said and starts those tariffs immediately, prices will jump - immediately (just like gas prices go up sharply every May just before Memorial Day weekend). That includes imported oil which is spelled g-a-s-o-l-i-n-e. The last thing you want is to jerk interest rates down and then back up because banks get nervous and start cutting back on the amount they're willing to lend. That hurts borrowing for mortgages, credit cards, auto loans, business loans - to name just a few. It's complicated, but Powell is taking a measured approach before trump comes in and starts jerking things around.
