After a lot of grinding, you actually can escape from the nether without anything
First, get wood from nether trees and make wood tools
Second, go to a basalt biome and get black stone, then you can upgrade to stone tools
Third, get to bastions and get the gold tp trade
Fourth, trade to get obsidian and iron
Fifth, find gravel and get flint
Sixth, make a flint and steel
Seventh, make and light up a nether portal

A couple alternate ideas, for when you don’t want to sever friendships. You could build a two way elevator to the top. You could use healing 3 arrows at the top of their afk farm. Use a water maze, or instead give them exactly 3 flame resistance potions. There’s plenty to not kill your friends but gamify traps or give them a good scare.

Alternatively, you can cover your traps in hoppers to collect their items and funnel them to their base. They’ll die to the trap, and wake to see their items safely stored in front of them.

a good one is to put the afk person into a regenerating cobblestone wall room and fill the room with water. Place a conduit and a elder guardian nearby, and it could take hours to mine one block, just for it to repair itself (it will take a lot of time thou (like a lot))
