Completely agree. I’ve always felt that the design is horrible. It could be so much more visually interesting and engaging. It could showcase different elements of an academic’s career in an exciting way. It just feels lacklustre.

That’s a good point. I experienced the same, I felt so annoyed with the email asking such question many times with the random paper. I finally decided to delete the account and unsubscribe all anything related to it.

I find it very useful and often the last resort for finding articles on less common topics, where my university’s library catalogue doesn’t find a single publication and the ones showing up on google scholar/ google books are not available in Europe. For example, I wanted to read some papers about contemporary Ecuadorian popular (folk) music genres, how they originated and how their reception in Ecuadorian society has been. Impossible to get a hand on barely anything, only on the academia site did I get access to a few articles on that topic and the author’s profile made me see, that this was what I was looking for. Apart from that, it’s handy for sharing some common research interest with scholar that are friends/ acquaintances of mine. I do agree, that beyond that, it’s a waste of time and very annoying with these random citations.

Searched for a book in pdf format . The link showed free. After it showed 5 Euro I was stupid enough to pay but instead of 5eur they took 70 EUR from my bank card and got nothing return just a junk file. Be careful it's a scam website

It's advanced search is very limited and doesn't offer sorting by citations. Like I need to get sources from people with a very good industrial and academic backround for my research.

Prof. Mullaney, no need to be sorry for casting a shadow over AcademiaDot since this is just shedding light. That enterprise exploits the needs of academics that no legitimate entity seems interested in serving properly. I mean explicitly that AcademiaDot is not legitimate. From what I saw of it it traffics bootleg pdfs of books directly *against* the interests of scholars and academia. It is not a pairt of academia but a pirate. Authors and university presses pay for those books, which ADot distributes to users as a benefit of membership. That is a scandal. When I pointed this bootlegging out to ADot its response says everything. 'Tell us when you see this and we will do something.' - Right. You will keep driving the bus for the traffickers, who pay you, and I take care of the authors. - I simply don't understand why they are not sued. (They are probably wondering this too.)

The website doesn't own a printing press and it is not a copy shop. That means they have no feature for create copies of a paper on a physical sheet of paper but it is only an online service. This is very different from classical publishing. Publishing means to print out something and submit it with the postal service to the library. So they can give it to the students for reading. Removing the physical printed information from the publishing workflow will reduce the quality of the information drastically.
