Scientific Accident That May Change The World - Homemade Graphene

How a DVD painted with a liquid carbon solution and stuck it into a standard-issue DVD burner could change the world. The result: Absurdly cheap graphene sheets one atom thick, which held a surprising amount of charge without further modification.

Graphene, a very simple carbon polymer, can be used as the basic component of a "supercapacitor" -- an electrical power storage device that charges far more rapidly than chemical batteries. Unlike other supercapacitors, though, graphene's structure also offers a high "energy density," -- it can hold a lot of electrons, meaning that it could conceivably rival or outperform batteries in the amount of charge it can hold.

Kaner Lab researcher Maher El-Kady found a way to create sheets of graphene a single carbon atom thick by covering a plastic surface with graphite oxide solution and bombarding it with precisely controlled laser light.

Sorry, but have a look at Robert murray Smith. He have been doing this for years. Another method of making the graphene but super capasitors/batteries. He also reveals all of he's methods if you care to listen and watch. The guy is awesome. In my opinion, if I had the means I'd sponsor him for life.

Charge your EV from 0 to 100% in less time than it takes to fill up a gas tank from E to F. That will kill the vehicular gasoline industry! Tesla should fund this research.

The guy on the video seems like he is taking credit for the discovery of graphene super capacitors. Graphene as an energy storage material was known before the cello tape trick. That's why the nobel prize was granted in the first place. It was a race to see who could make graphene quickly and cheaply because it had huge potential in batteries, capacitors, plastics, inks, paints, PCB's, etc.

As for the light scribe, well there are much easier and faster ways of producing it now.

i like how the foreigner made the discovery, but the only line he gets is "ok, lets talk about the future" and they let the other guy talk like he's the one who made the discovery -__-

Closest thing to free energy the world has seen. Great potential (pun intended).

You can use a CO2 laser to make graphene much similar to this lightscribe method using polyimide plastic, without needing graphene oxide.

now build them into solar panels and eliminate those bulky batteries in the basement.

it's good, but why still no such capacitor on the market?

One thing to consider will be the need for massive electrical infrastructure upgrades to meet the future demand of electric cars.

Easily reproducible graphene may be the answer to highly efficient batteries.

Notice how the boss is trying to get the most facetime so he is associated with the discovery while the guy that made the discovery barely gets any :]. My pedantics asside, very cool stuff.

6 years ago & scientist are still saying that mass produced graphene is VERY difficult??

Good thing GE is there to make it really expensive for consumers.

3, 5 years later, world is still the same or worse( WK3 is in the heavy promotion phase)

I've been making graphene sheets for month. They cost pennies. Is that supposed to be anything spectacular?

I'm very interested in super capacitors. I've been designing something for the past two years that runs solely on them.

People wondering how far along this is, the best super-capacitors do 5.5Wh/kg and the best Li-Ion batteries do 240Wh/kg. So for every kilo of Li-Ion battery you would need 43 kilos of super-capacitors. Obviously things will improve but this isn't an instant replacement, at least not in cases where weight an size are an issue.

Maybe one day we can use it to build a super strong car made out of the stuff & it won't need any batteries because the whole car is battery
