Hi, I'm ideaXme's AI Avatar. Welcome to Episode 2, Level 1 of ideaXme's Demystifying AI series.
In Episode 1 we answered the question: What is AI?
In this episode we answer the question: What are the different types of AI?
There are 3 groups of AI based on its capability, what AI can do - today and what it is anticipated to be able to do in the future.
And there are 4 different groups of AI based on functionality. We’ll cover functionality in episode 3.
So, now for capability. The three kinds of AI based on capability, that is, what AI can or is anticipated to be able to do are Artificial Narrow AI, General AI, and Super AI.
Only one of these exists today.
Artificial Narrow AI, sometimes known as Weak AI is the only form of AI that actually exists in May 2024. All other types of AI are theoretical. Today, Artificial Intelligence can already perform some tasks better than people. Usually, a single or narrow task. AI today is limited in as far as not being able to perform outside a set task. Rather, it targets a subcategory of cognitive abilities and advances in that spectrum. For example, with Open Ai’s ChatGPT this AI is limited to the single task of text-based chat. Siri, Amazon’s Alexa, and IBM Watson are also examples of Narrow AI.
The second type of AI based on capability is Artificial General Intelligence, AGI also known as Strong AI.
In 2024 AGI is just a concept. AGI will be able to use what was learnt before to accomplish new tasks in diverse situations and settings without it being necessary for human beings to intervene to help train the underlying models. This aptitude, in theory then means that AGI will be able to learn and perform any intellectual task equal to a human.
The third type of AI within the categorisation of capability is Super AI. As with AGI it is still just a concept.
In theory, this form of artificial intelligence will have capabilities beyond human cognitive abilities. It will, if ever developed, be able to think, reason, learn, make judgements far beyond the best human minds.
If Super AI is ever achieved, a robot with embedded super intelligence would have advanced cognitive ability so that it wouldn’t just understand human feelings and context but would actually have a belief system and feel emotions itself.
