This is an excerpt of a longer podcast in which I learn how to read a medieval hall house with John Roberts from the Weald and Downland Museum. The extract is illustrated with images captured during my visit to Bayleaf Farm at the museum.

Loved the video and love learning about wealden houses. I’ve also read regarding jettying in non-urban situations that it saves the expense of the paving required on the ground floor, since wood in contact with earth is less than ideal, so those square feet are cheaper on an upper floor than the ground floor. It is very interesting to hear the interpretation based on siting. Thank you so much for doing this piece!

Thanks to John & Sarah! This is the kind of explanation I crave, but don't often find, when visiting historic sites 🙌

Loved this. I've been to The Weald and Downland Museum several times - the first in the 80s so it's been lovely to see it develop. Such an amazing range of buildings.
