The mission of the U.S. aircraft was specifically to kill Yamamoto and was based on United States Navy intelligence on Yamamoto's itinerary in the Solomon Islands area. The death of Yamamoto reportedly damaged the morale of Japanese naval personnel, raised the morale of the Allied forces, and was intended as revenge by U.S. leaders, who blamed Yamamoto for the attack on Pearl Harbor that initiated the war between Imperial Japan and the United States.

The U.S. pilots claimed to have shot down three twin-engine bombers and two fighters during the mission, but Japanese records show only two bombers were shot down. There is a controversy over which pilot shot down Yamamoto's plane, but most modern historians credit Rex T. Barber.

And now, some of WW2s memorable, and succesful, Determination quotes:
Churchill: Sink the Bismarck!
Stalin: No land behind the Volga!
Hitler: Bring me Fegelein!
Roosevelt: Get Yamamoto!

Glad you got this scene up. I don’t think we have another movie that dared to touch on 18/4/1943.

The wreckage of Yamamoto’s G4M is still there in the jungle and might be resting there permanently.

Operation Vengeance. The plan called for an a flight of 18 P-38's, four of which were assigned to the "kill team, " to intercept Yamamoto's flight at 9:35 over Bougainville. The P-38's got there at 9:34. Although another pilot claimed to have shot down Yamamoto's plane most historians give credit to Rex Barber who actually engaged Yamamoto's Betty from behind eventually striking the left wing and engine causing the plane to bank sharply to the left and eventually crash. A Japanese search party found his body the next day still in his seat but ejected from the plane. The autopsy revealed a gun shot to his shoulder and one to his lower left jaw and exited under his right eye, headshot.

He was found in his seat, still sitting in it, with a bullet through his chest and another that blew off his jaw. But Yamamoto was positively identified.

A shame, really. He was against the war. And he knew Japan would lose. "For six months I can guarantee nothing but victory. After that I can guarantee nothing."

The only man who could have replaced him, Admiral Tamon Yamaguchi, was killed at Midway.

Yamamoto was such a badass that he can withstand even a 50 cal hit.

I knew a man from brownwood Texas, who flew a P38 and flew with Richard Bong.

You should upload a scene from the War movie White Tiger. Where a single Tiger tank massacres an army of T-34 85's.
A tribute to the man who actually did it. Franz Stautdegger.

Never saw the shoot down depicted before thanks for putting it up, I think Yamamoto was flying in a Betty Bomber and that the Americans cracked their code and knew that the Japanese commander was aboard

The P-38 the 1st combat plane to achieve 400 MPH was used as a long range fighter to escort bombers over Germany where it failed miserably no twin engine fighter can out dogfight a single engine fighter. Then they adopted the energy fighter technique pioneered by the flying tigers in China. Gain altitude and dive on your opponent use your speed to get away and try again do not dog fight with a Zero or in two turns the Zero will out turn and shoot you down. After this the P-38 achieved the highest kill to loss ratio of any US fighter it's fire power was awesome

At first, escote Zero fighters were supposed to be 18, but he asked others to reduce it. I do believe that he thought he would be attacked and killed in action

If I'm not mistaken, isn't there actual gun camera footage of the Yamamoto shoot-down?
