Correction:
Shortly after I uploaded this video, I did more testing of the sunrise-sunset cycle on various maps. It seems that they are not accurate based on their angle on each map. Basically, the sun does not move in the same direction in each map according to the map's rotation in the overall world. Still though, this should not cause an issue with this video and the end result. Also, Jeremiah does say that the muskeg and Mystery Lake Cabin are south of the Trapper's Cabin. This confirms the world map is oriented the wrong way and north is on the very right side of the world map.

While working on a larger video for The Long Dark, I wanted to take the time to figure out where Port Mary is on Great Bear Island. Despite it only being mentioned once, it is more important than you think. In this video, I play detective in order to solve the mystery of where Port Mary is. for me its Coastal highway its such a chill area and once you know the routes to avoid wolves - its a great place to move past day 150 and pick your long term goals. I love that there are 3 bears that roam nearby.

4:10 I love this. It makes sense how all the roads line up and how the seismic activity broke everything. Hinterland broke the map into two sections, one of them being “Lower Great Bear”. LOWER??! WHAT!? If the interior mountains are above the map then that excites the hell outta me.. Great Bear Mountain, Great Bear Plains, Great Bear Lakes! The far future is so bright! Hoping for more decades of updates to slowly come. Ironically the seismic activity allows the nature of the game to be constantly expanded upon. Gigantic fjords, plains so big you can’t see the edges, huge depots and markets, abandoned snowmobiles, CARGO SHIPS. There’s so many possibilities. I want the crates in the game to be less plentiful but not empty, pry them open. Since there’s so many, they should add ones that have been opened, less plentiful but same wood harvest. The ones that aren’t cracked open are stocked. Someone hiding food crates under the stairs in the dam seems plausible. The summit and episode 1 plane crash have crates with loot. There’s a plot hole there when ALL the crates seem sealed.

Gonna go with Pleasant Valley. Plenty of wildlife, the weather is not so great but the valley floor has long sight distances and it is fairly easy to stay out of trouble. And, in my opinion, the Farmhouse is the best main base in the game, or at least in the Top 3.

4:55 Cattail stalks are renewable. They are found while beachcombing.

TWM for me. Cozy hut (other than the hole in the roof). Deer, wolves, rabbits, bear, moose and ptarmigan all a short walk away. Plus a fishing hut. Ridiculous amounts of supplies on the summit. Spent a good portion of my 500 day run there.

Pleasant Valley is my favorite now. The farm house is in the center of the map. I can easily gear up with the plane crash. Access to Timberwolve Mt Ash Canyon. The cave to coastal highway. Keepers pass to the Prison. You got the cave to the dam.

Once I have my suppy chains set up, the farm is my main base, and I can fan out from there.

I have several regions that I like but my favorite is Mystery Lake because of Trappers cabin. I am always drawn to it. I love the solitude.

Pleasant Valley is my favourite region. The farmstead is just too cozy!

There’s so much to learn in the buffers too, like in BRR you’ll learn the trans island line is multiple trains and that it’s a loop or in pv signal hill knowing why classical is always playing on radio

In any case we can imagine that Great Bear Island is probably much bigger that what we can find in the game.

As a fellow long dark lore enthusiast I am still speculating about the location of Rupert’s Landing, a location mentioned by Jeremiah in pre redux episode 2 as a place he went to to resupply, also fav location is Timberwolf mountaineers hut, all the game and fishing close and the stunner views, I’ve really taken to ash canyon as well

Up until this video I was believing Perseverance Mills is in your second location, near Bleak Inlet and Forlorn Muskeg. If you watch the cutscene where Astrid floats into PM.
1) The boat is drifting with land on her right side. If she leaves from Coastal Highway (Assuming that is CH) it would be more logical to drift to your second location.
2) We get an aerial shot of the boat drifting into the harbor. That looks a lot like the land below Bleak Inlet on the latest world map.

It seems like we have only explored 25% of Great Bear Island. Because what is revealed is looks like a corner of a map.

Have you noticed on the world map there is a large tear where PM/ Port Mary is? There are small rips and tears in the map but that one is the biggest.

If I may play devil's advocate. I was told that when you drop a stick or an arrow it will always point North. Today I did this at The Fishing Camp. The stick pointed away from the ocean and towards the trailers on the hill. If your theory is correct it should point to Desolation Point. Nevertheless I believe Point Mary and Perseverance Mills are next to Desolation Point.

We have been reading the map wrong the whole time! That makes sense. In the 1st version of Wintermute Jeremiah tells Will he would travel for supplies to a town called Rupert's Landing. This is not mentioned in the latest version. Do you have other evidence that we were reading the map wrong? You may consider this

1) Grey Mother says Perserverance Mills is North of Milton. (I thought this was a loophole)
2) Mackenzie crashes his Plane in Milton. This always seemed weird to me because Great Bear Island is based on Vancouver Island. At first it looks like Will's aircraft is coming from the Pacific Ocean in the West and they are trying to reach PM which is on the other side of the huge land mass. If the map is tilted all makes sense.

Do you think it's possible that Port Mary and Perserverance Mills could be one and the same? They're both "PM", and it could make sense as a sort of final "we don't need the Mainland" to rename the port, because it's not really a port if there's never going to be another ship, and the people of Great Bear will perservere as they always have. Grey Mother also mentions people fleeing for the coast, and the route they would have taken on foot before the seismic activity would take them north through PV, through Keeper's Pass, and so forth to where Port Mary is likely to be. We also only hear of Port Mary the one time, but we hear about Perserverance Mills directly in the story, which could mean the name of the town was changed some time ago, after the collapse?
