In most cemeteries, in central Illinois and central Indiana, burial containers of some kind are required, whether that be a gravelliner or a burial vault that is lined and sealed. Both serve the same purpose, which is to keep the ground above the casket from settling as the casket deteriorates over time. Without a burial vault or gravelliner, the ground would settle, causing more maintenance for the cemetery to continuously level and seed the ground above the casket. Graveliners prevent this as well as burial vaults, but burial vaults. Also, seal out the soil, water, pests, and any other external factor from coming in contact with the casket.

Having been in the funeral business, I didn't want to have an issue with water in my mother's remains. I picked a top of the line sealer casket and sealer vault. We poured a 6 inch base of concrete. After the concrete was set, we placed her vault in a larger vault and then placed the top vault, sealing it with her casket and vault inside. We then poured concrete over the second vault and then a waterproof sealer over the concrete. The entire thing could pay for a new Cadillac. However, my mother was terrified of water. I have conducted some bizarre services, but I don't know of very many who have put their loved one in 3 vaults.

I honestly never knew about the vaults, I thought it was just the casket. I have lost alot of loved ones but my mom or dad always did the arrangements I was never in the room while at the funeral place and my step dad who past 3 years ago was cremated.
