Making a home fish tank is a pretty straight forward job. Cut the glass pieces and stick them together with silicone.
The tricky part is the knowledge. Do your search, study the different fishes and what water they need, look for cleaning agents, oxygenation methods, or even if different fishes can coexist in the same tank.
In this video, we are making a fish tank out of 4mm glass, 30cm wide by 50cm long by 30cm high.
Actualy the width is 30.8cm, because we'll need to encase the two side panels of 4mm each.
What we'll need :
- 3 glass pieces 30x50cm
- 2 glass pieces 30x30.8cm
- Wooden frame pieces for the upper and lower supports
- Fish friendly silicone, without chemicals that can harm the fish.
- Marine plywood for the base
Place the bottom glass on the plywood and secure it with silicone. This is one of the 30x50 pieces.
Apply silicone along one of it's long edges, and place the second 30x50, and secure it with something heavy until the silicone cures. This forms one of the side panels.
Apply silicone along the bottom's short edge, and attach one of the 30x30.8 pieces, again securing it in place until it cures. Apply silicone along the corner of the two vertical glasses, to stick them together and form the 90 degree angle.
Note that the 30.8mm glass will be the short side of the tank, and the 30x50 sides will fit "inside it". That's why the length of this panel needs to be 8mm longer. In order to be wide enough to cover the two outer 4mm panels.
It is a good idea when cutting these glass panels, to make note of the 30cm side and the 30.8cm side, so as to fit them properly.
Now that you've done the first two pieces, you can attach the other two pieces in the same way, applying silicone carefully around the edges of the bottom piece and the sides.
When the silicone has cured, you can install the wooden side supports. Cut appropriate length pieces, and make a rectangle that fits tightly around the top edge of the tank.
Secure the wood pieces together, either with nails or small screws. Place the top support and secure it in place with silicone.
Do the same with the bottom support. This one is easier to secure with nails on the plywood.
The tank is ready to be filled with water, fish, decorations, sand and gravel maybe, whatever you chose.
Just be careful that whatever you place inside the tank is fish friendly, prefferably from pet shops.
Also, do your homework about fish food, water oxygenation, water changing and generaly taking care of your fish.
Fish should be considered as pets, and should be treated with the proper care, just like any other pet.
For larger tanks, you'll need thicker glass and corner supports, due to the higher pressure of the water.
The small air pump in the video is from an electronic blood pressure monitor. Any other kind can be used.
Finally, take extra care when cutting glass. Always wear eye and hand protection.
The glass debris is very small and invisible, and the cut side is rasor sharp. Allways grind the edges with sand paper.
