Because the airline can't guarantee that the plane WILL actually be the one you fly on. At the last minute that plane could have something happen - a maintenance issue, crew hours delay etc - and you'll fly on a different aircraft.

Promising "You'll be on a brand new plane" or "least crowded flight" and then having an old, completely packed flight is the best way to kill your company.

You can’t guarantee that less crowded flight will stay that way. In fact, advertising a flight as less crowded will attract more people and fill up the plane. That would absolutely cause dissatisfaction with the purchase.

People also tolerate crap for a lower price because its only for 1-4 hours typically. The whole airport, security, hidden charges everything about it is truly awful experience. but its better than sitting on a boat for days or weeks before airplanes.

Giving me one price and then adding a s*** load of extras is what's killing it for me.
I despise that kind of selling manipulation.
We want one price and Non-Cramping legroom and that's it.

hes wrong: it'd be a logistical nightmare to offer aircraft options. Airlines safe money by flexibly assigning whatever aircraft is available based on demand and other specific criteria

Passengers care about baggage, number of stops and price mainly.

Cheaper price isn't killing the industry. Shit service and horrible experiences are.

As a parent who travels with a one year old, this would be a godsend

The duration of flights is typically listed along with the price. Often the cheapest flight will have one or more stops and long layovers. The nonstop flight that travels between Orlando and San Francisco is just over 6 hours. Conversely, a flight that’s only $50 less often has one or more stops, long layovers and the same trip takes 13 hours.
The duration times aren’t highlighted on the sites I’ve used and it’s definitely an important factor to consider.
I think the entire industry needs an overhaul that would improve passenger experiences as well as those of airline employees. It used to be a much nicer way to travel but today it’s an unnecessarily stressful thing to endure.

Yes, price is important but so is arrival / departure time and total travel time - which is shown on Google travel.

Assuming I'm in no rush to get to my destination, I choose by the time the flight leaves/arrives. I ain't getting a 6am flight if there is one at 12pm.

Airlines use revenue accounting, statistical analysis, historical data, yield control, and ancillary services to make sure flights are optimized. Price may be important for some customers, but it is not the only concern for many, especially business travelers.

The problem is what if your aircraft is delayed and it ends up being a older model, now the airline has to refund all the passengers who thought they was flying a brand new plane. Good idea, but it can't be implemented.

Rich person problems…
A lot of people work in foreign countries and return home for holidays. For us having a flight at competitive prices means the difference between seeing your loved ones or not.

Two things:
The airline industry is growing very quickly, not "killing itself"
The airline would set the price of a seat based on the demand, so giving as little information as possible ensures that you fill up every plane as much as possible
If you give people the choice between an old plane and a new plane, you could end up with an empty flight

They're also killing themselves by being quite rude and cold to passengers. I understand they may be jaded from some passengers who were obnoxious but that shouldn't mean that everyone else should pay the price. As the saying goes, "the innocent pay for the sins of the guilty"

I book hotels like that and have never had an issue

a) the airline industry has surprisingly little to do with flying. It's more about using to unspent points as a bank.

b) there is one more variable: flight departure time. That's more what I buy for rather than price.

the price is depending on the flight departure time and the day of the week.
