From one icon to another: that's the legacy of the 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster. The legendary 300SL Gullwing coupe was its predecessor, but with the coupe's sales declining after four years, the German carmaker decided a change was needed. The roadster was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in May 1957. In both instances, SL stands for Sport Leicht, German for Sport Light and appropriately stated. The coupe was re-engineered, with the suspension improved for an American audience interested in Mercedes-Benz but wanting more comfort and a worthy trunk, and the convertible assumed the familiarity of the coupe's Gullwing configuration. The chassis was redesigned with lower sills, while traditional swing-style doors replaced the unique previous doors. The new roadster was also heavier than its older sibling, gaining 242.5 pounds.
