Hot Racing Spur Gear for Traxxas Slash - Install and Test!

Over the past year and a half my brother Max and I have stripped 23 plastic spur gears. So today, hopefully I will be solving that problem by installing a steel spur gear from Hot Racing on my Traxxas Slash 4x4 VXL. It was very simple to put together and it seems to be holding up pretty dang good. Hopefully this will last for quite a while as they are not cheap! Hope you enjoy!

Also if you add just a microscopic amount of grease it can help prevent stripping!

3 years later, what has been your experience? Has it held up?

I have oversized tires on my Rustler and go on extreme terrain. Doesn't last long. Going to switch to metal, but actually upgrade the entire diff once that arrives.

I know i'm a bit late here but I was wondering if the metal on metal gears had any impact on battery life? When I ran a metal spur on mine I only got about 15 mins of run time before it ran out of juice whereas with a plastic spur it would last about an hour.

I just bought it. Would you recommend putting a little bit of grease on it. I know this is a weird analogy but when I was in the military the The CLP which stands for clean lubricate and protect kind of like grease that we use to clean our weapons we didn't put as much when we knew that we were going to be going into a really dirty environment simply because the grease traps all the dirt and all that I was wondering what your thoughts are

How is the metal gear doing after a year?

Lol am I the only one here trying to see how big this spur gear is because I wanted to use this as my DIY Arduino Steering Wheel project which requires a higher gear ratio so the potentiometer spins less and more precise 900-degree steering instead of 270? Kinda overkill to use a hobby grade precise gearing for this lmao

Good deal. Thanks for sharing. I only have one Traxxas RC and it's the BigFoot. I go through spur gears like crazy running on 3s with a brushless upgrade. I should have left the BigFoot stock but it's so much more fun with the extra power. I think the metal spur gear is a great solution. I would think it might be more noisy with metal but that's probably just me and my bad mesh mechanics. I have another 1/10 scale car that I upgraded and now the spur eats the pinion gear. I wonder if a different pitch would help ? Like a Mod 8 ... I have no idea... Thanks again for sharing as I thought I was the only one having problems.

Stripped my first spur gear on its 10th battery. It may have been my fault for being on the throttle during a rollover, but im thinking about this gear.

Going through all those spur gears is a symptom of something else. Have you checked your motor mount at all? I'll bet it's f'ed. I see you still have the plastic mount. If the motor mount's bearing gets too hot (seizing), it melts the plastic mount's bore so that the drive-line wobbles around and ruins pinions and spurs. Get an aluminium motor mount and your problems will be all over, Traxxas 6860R (7460R for LCG), OR Hot Racing SLF38X06 (LCF38X06 for LCG). You can then just go back to using a regular plastic spur. It should last quite a while given proper mesh and slipper clutch adjustments are maintained. (less spinning weight in this area is better for acceleration). A loose slipper clutch creates a ton of heat which compromises the plastic spur gears.

If you do go to a metal engine mount, make certain to use shorter 12mm screws that go into it from underneath the RC instead of the longer 14mm M4 that are usually stock, and use some medium loctite!

Friend, please help me, I'm new to car modeling, I built an onroad car, with a 64pitch pinion with 40T, and a 64pitch 96T spur gear, I use a hobywing 10bl120a esc, the futaba 3pv radio has the end point at 100%, the 10.5T Brushless engine for 1/10 cars in the few laps I drove, the spur gear damaged all the teeth, how can I be doing so that this doesn't happen?

What size r the set screws for the penion gear

The metal won’t strip but if you bony mesh your gears right you will have problems with pinions

People say metal makes it louder but it doesn't seem like it

lol only just started collecting the traxxas models . ran a rusler vxl just today and at night .set up properly blabla first thing i thought was the spur gears seem to wear quite quickly .. that is why you buy bulk on ebay . thats why i looking at metal spur gears !

I just bought a Jato yesterday.
And the stock spur gear died during the 4th tank of the break in process.
What a crappy experience with traxxas so far💯😡🤦‍♂️

You didn’t even think of people watching this so they can reassemble? wtf would you speed it up for.

To me, its very annoying trying to learn how to take things apart and put them together properly only to see the video speed through that process so new guys cant learn a thing from it. Ill find a new video as this wasn’t for me, but dont get me wrong, its still a good video.
