Watching this cinematic does two things: 1 seeing this from the perspective of Marius you realize how terrifying the prime evils are - giving a sense of reality to the scene and a point of reference for the viewer. 2 The viewer is made to feel justifiably sorry for Marius. For the first time since the game began you realize how out of depth Marius is - he’s being asked to contend with things no mortal should be able to handle. Of course he wouldn’t follow Diablo to hell, who would? So the character of Marius grounds the story, amplifies the terror, and heightens the pressure on and heroism of the Player character. But perhaps most beautifully, Marius becomes a tragic hero after this cinematic. By the end we cannot help but feel sorry for Marius when he is killed by Baal, for he is killed for being human, flawed and scared. When we confront Baal in the fifth act our fight against evil isn’t a fight for good. It’s a fight for humanity, and redemption of the human spirit. It’s also revenge, for poor souls like Marius, caught in the battles of greater powers.

I feel like this was a brilliant way to acknowledge Mephisto's bad lip syncing in the original; by showing his speech as that of an evil spirit that doesn't depend on the same tools as a physical being. Nicely done.

Marius, walking by Baal and Mephisto and into the portal: "Excuse me, I'm with him!"
Mephisto, somewhere between perplexed an outraged: "Wha.. Die you insignificant little shi..."
Baal, nonchalantly: "No no, he's cool. Let him through."

I love how all three Prime Evils can't even sense the presence of Marius watching them xD

The fact that his "cloak" is just skin, it's absolutely terrifying. They did such a good job making all the prime evils look simply monstrous.

Mephisto has always been the most terrifying of the three for me. Seeing him in the resurrected version does not disappoint.

What I saw then was not meant for mortal a demon, capable of flight, unable to cross a moat. So, I and cast firewall repeatedly from a safe distance. Then I went through the portal as you asked, Tyrael. You can give both of these stones to the Hero when they actually get here.

Daaaamn they should've kept the earthquake effect as Diablo walked. It made him feel massive in the original.

Marius must have been a high level character without gear for being able to be THAT close alone with the trio without dying of heart attack.

This was my favorite cinematic as a kid..They didnt disappoint with the remaster. Diablo and Mephisto models look epic. And the transformation scene was so well done.

Gotta love Mephisto, his speech is like the most over-the-top evil you'll ever hear. I prefer my villains like this, instead of the "I'm only doing evil for your own good", Mephisto is just a primordial force that exists only to cause suffering and misery.

It's crazy when you realize that Marius was standing in the same room with the 3 most powerful, most evil entities in all of existence, and the only thing that's keeping him alive is a pillar that he's hiding behind
