Wow, interpolation managed to make an incredible action sequence from my all time favorite movie look like a low budget student film. First time I bought a TV with this feature I couldn't turn it off fast enough. It looks so bad.

If these events happened in real life and you were a bystander on this roof witnessing them unfold, they might look this way to you. This is what is so interesting about the 'Soap opera effect' to me. It doesn't heighten or alter the foundational reality of images to the degree alternative motion techniques do so much as it underscores it. It's like it's saying: "THIS IS HAPPENING. AND IT'S HAPPENING NOW." It does this so well, in fact, that it can even make the plainly physically impossible seem somewhat more believable. By normalizing the shared perceptual environment between the media and the viewer it makes it harder to deny what you are seeing.
