A Brief History of Karaköy
Karaköy has been a commercial district since the Byzantine period. Genoese merchants were allowed by the Byzantine Emperor to trade here. Today, you can come across artifacts from the Genoese in Karaköy. One of the most famous works of the Genoese is the Galata Tower. After the conquest of Istanbul in 1453, Genoese, Venetians and Catalan merchants lived in the region. Sephardic Jews fleeing the Spanish Inquisition in 1500 were settled here. Great British, French and Italian soldiers who came to fight for the Crimean War were settled in Karaköy. A dock was built to bring military equipment to Karaköy.
In the 19th century, Karaköy became a banking district. The headquarters of the Ottoman Bank was established in Karaköy. Austrian and Italian banks started to open branches in Karaköy.
With the 20th century, port customs buildings started to be built in Karaköy and Karaköy became the center of trade. Today, many business centers are actively working in Karaköy. Galataport is also home to one of the world's leading ports with its cruise port.
