Показать описание
A phosphonic acid antibiotic primarily used to treat lower urinary tract infections as well as prostate infections and cystitis (bladder infection) in women (not indicated for kidney infections).
It is generally taken by mouth.

(Side effects)
Common:
• diarrhea
• nausea
• headache
• vaginal yeast infections, itching of the vagina or genital area
• thick, white vaginal discharge with no odor or with a mild odor
• pain during sexual intercourse
Severe:
• anaphylaxis
• Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea

It is bactericidal and works by interfering with bacterial cell wall biogenesis by inactivating the enzyme UDP-N-acetylglucosamine-3-enolpyruvyltransferase (MurA).
It enters the bacterial cell through the glycerophosphate transporter.

(Inhibitors of bacterial cell wall synthesis)
• fosfomycin: A simple phosphonic acid antibiotic used mainly for the treatment of urinary tract infection.
• bacitracin: Found in many topical preparations (too toxic for systemic use) active against Gram-positive bacteria.
• isoniazid: Used to treat tuberculosis.
• cycloserine: An analogue of D-alanine used occasionally against multiresistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
