Arranged and played by Dennis Janzer, two contrasting sounds of the organ are featured: Flutes at 8' and 2' pitches and a "Vox Regal," an open cylindrical reed pipe, basically a Vox Humana with the caps removed, giving a bright "throaty" sound. The drone is played by both feet, adding a double pedal. This 1990's recording is from my concert series "Arts On The Avenue" at Grand Avenue Congregational Church, now The Irish Cultural Heritage Center, Milwaukee, WI.
The tune is from the 1700's and known by many different names: Garry Owen or Garryowen, (translated as Owen's Garden) "We May Roam Through This World," Auld Bessy and as a marching tune for Custer's 7th Cavalry. It was also used as a regimental March by the Royal Irish Regiment and was a popular "drinking song," including numerous texts. The tune is found in an 1800's book of Country Dances and in Gow's Repository of the Original Scotch Slow Tunes and in 1807, the Irish poet Thomas Moore wrote the poem " The Daughters of Erin" to go with the tune, bestowing to it that name.
