One way to get the object cracks to not show before the fracture, Take your duplicated non-fractured object and make it visible. Make your fractured object invisible.
When you animate your object that will hit the fractured object, toggle the visibility of the non-fractured object to visible on the impact frame and make your fractured object visible.
So you can still have close up shots of the object up until the very frame where it shatters.
