Let's just take a moment to look at how underrated Asgore and his theme are.

*You tell Asgore his song is underrated.
*He nods sadly.

You let Asgore know his theme sounds just as hype on the piano. 'He nods happily'

For me, the part from 1:54 onwards depicts Asgore's despair. His son and his adopted child both were killed. His kingdom is corrupted. The monsters lost the war and were forced to go to the Underground. And Asgore is responsible as the leader. And that hate for himself because of his failures drifted Asgore and Toriel apart. He is just a poor old man, not knowing how to handle his loss, so he killed the humans for their souls to actually be a good king and free the monsters. He just wants to do whatever is best for his people.
And now you try to stop him.. and he, being as frustrated and desperate as he is, destroys the mercy-button. He wants no mercy. He wants the best he can give his kingdom, which is Frisk's death. And when he starts to realize that you will overwhelm him, the theme has this high piano notes to show his last bits of hope. But also desperation. He feels as if he betrayed his people because he, the king of the Underground, wasn't strong enough to protect them.
As you may've already found out, I find Asgore to be the most sympathic and best-written character with the strongest backstory. Probably my favourite character in Undertale.

Since there was a high request to make a better video of this song, I am now happy to show you a bit more powerful version with the intro "Bergentrückung". Enjoy it!

Hallelujah.

Love how it becomes Heartache (The song that plays when you fight Toriel) towards the end.

does anyone else feel bad for asgore? i mean he did some really bad things, but isn't the whole game pretty much about redemption and loving you enemies?

Bergentrückung is one of the best music bits in Undertale. even more, because they used a word as title, that I haven't heard anywhere in the modern world and would not have thought, that foreigners would even know the meaning... impressive!
