One of surfing's biggest influencers, Mark Cunningham, explains that the keys to body surfing are "know how to swim, have a suit that is going to stay on, kick like hell, and come out of the water smiling..." It's that easy, right?!

In this episode of Surf Sufficient, another one of body surfing's finest ambassadors, Keith Malloy, gives his take on body surfing's various communities, how to maximize surface tension and planing as well as some tipson how you might approach your next session sans surfboard.

Losing da fin is expensive, drawstring is a must,  some conditioning and wave knowledge, and go have some fun.

Old style bodysurfing, or outrigger style, didn't use an arms forward planing hand at all. You keep the inboard arm back by your side, perhaps bending at the elbow to plane inside the wave, and the outboard arm can be back by your side or down on the face of the wave. You can make more speed using the outrigger, while a layback is a stall move that gets you higher on the face.

When people ask me, "what's the deal with bodysurfing?" there are lots of videos online to show them. This is one of my favorites. I disagree with the comments about hand planes. Perfect curtain line by Mark Cunningham!

Absolutely love body surfing - the ultimate surfing experience. Favourite spot, Dee Why Point, Sydney, Australia.

Hand planes are a crutch. You don't need them and you're better off without them. Panics is a very easy wave. There are many personal styles of bodysurfing. Go to Sandys when its big and hollow to see the variety.

da hook has loved it since the first time and will never get too far away from it! Some new tricks are still out there too but the underwater taek-off, like a dolphin, remains my favorite! that and riding with the phosphorescence at nite! hope to see some of you in the water again! aloha

Thanks guys! great video!!! loved the variety of waves too.
I did my first body surfing comp with Wawa wooden surfboards in Noordhoek Cape Town this weekend and now I'm looking for tips to take that first place! But there isn't that much to say about it except for the subtle nuances that have to be learned for yourself, by experiencing and watching guys on the wave.

had no idea that people wore fins to body surf - now I understand. Some serious speed being generated in the water
