Pierre Pillot (1748-1822) was one of the most singular and memorable master furniture makers of the 18th century in Southern France. His name comes to mind whenever we encounter fine pieces made in the city of Nîmes which present a high dexterity in their overall level of quality, especially in terms of carving.

Although most known for his chair production, an armoire by Pillot is conserved in the Nîmes museum. This armoire presents the key criteria for attribution to Pillot, namely the presence of distinctly unusual neoclassical design and decor elements (prominent Greek frieze under the cornice, squared and tapered feet).

This video preserves a trace of this improbably piece by Pillot while shedding light on the subject of period furniture as a whole, and while discussing the qualities that makes certain period armoires more collectible than others.

Thanks for watching!

I'm 34 and just in love with antique furniture and with your videos I've learned so much.

Your channel is cause for celebration. Your enthusiasm for the French decorative arts is delightful to encounter after years of decline of interest in the American psyche.

Did you mention the type of wood it was made from?
