Full planning permission has been granted for a mixed use development at 19 Devil’s Tower Road.

The build will house 153 residential units as well as some commercial space and is set to be placed at the site of the Coviran supermarket.

Residents of the area, particularly North View Terraces, expressed concern at this morning’s meeting about the pace of development in Devil's Tower Road. They said there was a great deal of disturbance when the Forbes building went up and that this would result in more of the same.

Despite this, the plans were approved with a vote of six to three.

This is the second time these plaans have been at the DPC, now seeking full planning permission. Developers have made changes to the project in line with those requested when it received outline permission. This included a reduction in height so the building dropped from east to west.

The plans would see the demolition of the Coviran supermarket, the Anes building and the ex-Sacarello premises. The creation of a 47 metre building would follow.

The DPC meeting featured substantial concern from residents of the area. One said there was a courtyard nearby that children play at and the demolition would make the area unsafe.

Northview Terrace residents share a wall with the Coviran supermarket and said they were concerned about the noise and pollution the development would bring. One asked what guarantees they would have that the cracks on the wall wouldn’t open up and that their building would be secure.

Minister Linares highlighted that a plan was in place to guide building on Devil’s Tower Road.

The Environmental Safety Group’s Janet Howitt questioned whether this development complied with it due to guidance on height, but town planners advised that it did.

The plan was ultimately given the green light but with some conditions. The balconies will have to be changed so that they stick out less and the hours of work have been amended to keep weekends more peaceful. This will be for particularly noisy and disruptive periods such as the demolition and piling. After this stage, the construction will revert to standard hours.
