I was in therapy contemplating divorce. Back then I didn't know what a narcissist was but i knew this relationship was just "off." My therapist told me she had never given the advice she was about to give me as her job in counseling was to try and save marriages. She told me to run. I did. Moved out of state. Never looked back. There was a lot of shame on my part for feeling so stupid. I couldn't even talk about it to my family. The gaslighting, the lies, my low self esteem, the total chaos of it all. It broke me for a long time. But getting far away and not engaging with him was the smartest thing I ever done.

A red flag that I ignored a LONG time ago. I was in college and I met this guy. We started hanging out. I had a car and he did not. He asked if he could borrow my car keys to put his books in my car and he would give them back after his next class. I said okay. When he gave me the keys back, he told me that he borrowed my car to drive home and he came back. His home was a half hour away. I was young and I didn't want to be petty, so I let it go. He turned out to be very abusive, and looking back, that was one of the first tests to see if I would tolerate him taking advantage of me. Of course I never should have given him the keys, but I should have dumped him right them.

A red flag is when they are confronted with something they did, they never apologize, however, they always have an excuse ready and blame you.

Narcs are also creatures of patterns, constantly repeating their game strategies, so always look for repetitive behavior that your gut instincts are telling you are off, and yes definitely words that don't match actions is a huge red flag.
